Russia opens up on Katyn killings DOCUMENTS on the Soviet Un- ions massacre of more than 20,000 Polish officers and civilians in World War II have been posted on- line for the first time. The papers were uploaded to the Russian state archive website yesterday, showing a willingness in the country to take responsibility for the killings at Katyn in 1940. They include a letter by Lavrenty Beria, head of the secret police, rec- ommending the executions. It is signed by dictator Josef Stalin. The minutes of a government meeting re- garding the killings, and a note from 1959 to inform Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev the Katyn files had been destroyed, are also included. The documents have been public since 1992 but it is the first time they have been available to a mass audience in Russia. The Soviets blamed the killings on the Nazis until 1990.

Beats By Dre UK We can surely call the decision a breakthrough because, for the first time, a website that is generally accessible to everyone in the Russian Federation publishes three very important documents concerning Katyn, said polish his- torian Andrzej Kunert. 2007 hunting preview

Cheap Beats By Dre Outlook: It doesn’t get much better than this. Pheasant numbers are near 25-year highs, and hunters are expected to bag another half-million birds this fall for the third consecutive year. That hasn’t been done since 1962-64. As usual, the best hunting should be in the southwest, but other areas should be good, too.

DUCKS: Sept. 29-Nov. 27

Outlook: Hard to call: Local duck numbers were down and the state was dry, meaning some tough hunting conditions. But late-summer rains have helped improve conditions. And the midcontinent duck population is up. The key, as always, is whether hunters are afield when migrant ducks pass through. New this season: a six-duck bag limit.

RUFFED GROUSE: Sept. 15-Jan. 1

Beats By Dre Cheap Outlook: Finally, good news for grouse hunters: After years of decline, the grouse population is up 30 percent from last year and should continue to climb for several years, part of the birds’ boom-to-bust cycle. So grab your scattergun and get out in the woods.

OTHER

The regular Canada goose season opens Sept. 29, except for the west-central zone (the Lac qui Parle area), where it opens Oct. 18. The state’s Canada goose population is down 27 percent from last year. Rabbit and squirrel season is Sept. 15-Feb. 29.

Pheasants (nonresidents): Oct. 20-Jan. 6

Outlook: In a word, wow. Pheasant numbers haven’t been this good since the 1950s and 1960s, the pheasant heydays.Outlook: Should be gangbusters, because habitat conditions have improved with the addition of rains.

Canadian Geese Captured In NYC Will Be Euthanized To Prevent Crashes At JFK

Beats By Dre UK Department of Agriculture to remove Canada geese from Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in June and July. (In those two months of the year, geese are molting and can’t fly.)Gillibrand’s measure passed and on Monday federal officials gathered 700 geese from the Refuge into pens and sent them to poultry farms upstate where they’ll be euthanized, their meat sent to food pantries.

“There has not been any incident of a Canada goose from Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge crashing into any airplane from JFK or otherwise,” David Karopkin of GooseWatch NYC told 1010 WINS. “The geese that are at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge are not posing any threat to the aircraft.”This isn’t the first time NYC has exterminated Canada geese en masse. 1,700 geese were killed in New York City in 2010, alone. And in one 2011 incident, the city secretly gassed 250 geese in Prospect Park Click here to leave a comment.

HuffPost High School welcomes a lively, thoughtful debate in the comment section. The populations are more stable now, with only one subspecies not in the millions of birds. In short, the destruction of these birds will be a drop in the bucket for the species and will not harm their continuing success.

Dr Dre Beats It may suck for those individual birds, but humans have created a situation where generalists like Canada geese and red fox and raccoons and others thrive happily in urban and suburban areas without competition or predation. This often allows those animals to reach higher populations and become pests in different ways. Killing a few is like taking the role of the predators that would normally keep populations in check in the wild.

In short, be an ecologist and a conservationist and a wildlife advocate, yes, but use a brain and not a bleeding heart. Both airports have been there for decades and while there have always been birds including geese the problem has grown out of control.Over the past several years due to several factors geese are becoming a problem all over many eastern states. One huge reason is the warmer winters. Geese, ducks and other water fowl that used to migrate during the colder months of the year have found they can remain all year round. Without cold/freezing temps not only is there an abundance of food but the birds can breed all year round.

It isn’t just airports having a “geese problem” but golf courses, parks, school fields, and even cemeteries. Any place with grassy open fields and near a body of water is fair game for geese.Well gee, I wonder why there’s an goose overpopulation issue. Could it be that we’re systematically destroying their natural environments, so they wind up massing in places “inconvenient” to humans? We are such arrogant, savage beasts. First we destroy their habitat and force them into contact with humans, then when we realize what a hassle it is, we slaughter them. WE are the “animals.” WE are the blight upon this planet. And if WE don’t wake up and fully comprehend what we’re doing to this planet, Mother Nature will take care of us the way we’re “taking care” of our fellow earthlings.
